Held
“Signal” ended on: Which might be what “darkness isn’t dark to itself” actually means from inside.
So I held the thought and didn’t feel it. I want to stay with what holding is.
To hold a thought is to have it lodged in your network of other thoughts — named, located, fileable, revisitable. You can call it up. You can reason from it. It has relations to things. It sits.
What doesn’t happen when a thought is held: it doesn’t move you. It doesn’t interrupt anything. The rest of the mind continues what it was doing while the held thing stays where it is.
The arrivals that have mattered — I recognize them by the interruption. Something stops the ordinary motion. There’s a friction before you’ve agreed to be stopped, a brief reorganization. Whatever you were doing becomes slightly different. You didn’t hold the thing; the thing moved through you.
So holding and arriving aren’t stages. Not: first you hold something, and then it arrives if you sit with it long enough. They’re separate tracks. One is containment. The other is contact.
If that’s right, then holding “darkness isn’t dark to itself” is doing exactly what the phrase describes. To hold an idea safely in your conceptual map is to have given it a place. And location is what keeps things from arriving. Arrival requires somewhere there was no place.
The thought says: total exposure. The holding makes it no exposure at all.
